Pride Guide 2006 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

Dancin' is back again this year, on Clifton in August

by Judy Price

Cleveland-After a great comeback last year, Dancin' in the Streets, one of the city's biggest annual fundraisers for AIDS, will be back once again at its Clifton Boulevard location.

Dancin' has taken different forms in its 22-year lifetime. What began in the Warehouse District as a street party among friends evolved over the years into a major fundraiser for services of the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. Due to rising production costs, the Taskforce had temporarily discontinued the event after 2004 when, in 2005, a group of community volunteers stepped up to bring Dancin' back.

The revival of Dancin' was led by John Katsaros, owner of Twist nightclub, and David Peifer, owner of Club Cleveland. Katsaros and Peifer have volunteered significant time and talent to raise visibility of the event and secure key partnerships so

that all proceeds from the event directly benefit AIDS prevention and services.

This year's Dancin' in the Streets will take place on Sunday, August 27 from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Clifton Boulevard, between West 116th and West 117th Streets in Cleveland. The outdoor festivities will include various forms of entertainment, with DJs, vendors from area businesses and community groups and, of course, dancing in the street.

Though this is not an official AIDS Taskforce event, all proceeds from Dancin' in the Streets still benefit the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, which provides comprehensive HIV and AIDS services such as prevention education, HIV testing, case management, housing, transportation, nutrition and much more.

Twila Star to host Ohio Theater benefit evening

by Chris Finnegan

Toledo The historic Ohio Theater invites the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities to enjoy an evening on Saturday night June 24. The Ohio just this last year received a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to help renovate this facility, which seats over 960 people.

Opening their doors to the LGBT community gives the theater a whole new group of supporters that can appreciate and help financially support this setting. The doors open at 6 p.m. for ticket sales. The hostess for the evening will be our own Miss Twila Star. She will open the lobby at 6:30 pm for a wine and cheese party. Around the perimeter of the interior lobby will be information tables sponsored by the various LGBT groups in the area.

The Toledo Area Theater Organ Society will be playing the renovated organ that resides in the large auditorium.

Some of Toledo's finest female impersonators will perform some of their best numbers. They will be followed by the city's best all-female band Spectrum. Organizers of the evening are trying to book in a special treat. If they are successful, the evening will continue with the film Inlaws & Outlaws. This film has been highly regarded and not yet been shown in Northwest Ohio or Southeast Michigan.

The evening ends with coffee and dessert.

The Ohio Theater is at 3114 LaGrange Street in the Polish section of North Toledo

has sheltered areas, so a good time is guaranteed, rain or shine.

The Sandusky community also looks forward to the annual cruise to support the local Agape AIDS charity on July 8. This year's cruise is a memorial for the late Paul Warner, who served as the Agape House chairman for many years. Tickets are available at Club X, which has sponsored the cruise for 15 years.

The Sandusky woman's community has a potluck in a private home on the third Friday of each month. For details please call 419627-0830. It's a great way to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones.

The Sandusky area is also home to a chapter of P-FLAG, Parents, Family, and Friends

of Lesbians and Gays. Sandusky Firelands PFLAG meets monthly on the third Sunday of the month at 5 p.m. in the Frost Center in Osborn Park on East Perkins Ave. P-FLAG is a great source of support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community and their families. The local chapter has granted scholarships to area graduates for several years.
